Gums are more sensitive than our teeth to external influences. We immediately notice signs that our teeth need attention when they are not well. It doesn't matter if it is extreme pain or severe physical damage. However, our gums are an entirely different story. Our gums are not as easily visible as our teeth. We tend to ignore them if we have diseases.

Just think about the number of times you had taken periodontal disease treatment. It's likely close to zero. It's probably as low as one or two. Why is this so? You assume it's dirt if you see blackish gums. You tend to forget about the slight pain in your gums when there isn't any evidence of an alleged problem tooth.

You might be wondering how gum disease can develop, even if you have good oral hygiene. Sometimes brushing alone is not enough. Gargling and flossing are good ways to protect your gums. Even if you do all of these things religiously, gum disease could still sneak into your mouth.

Gum disease is largely caused by the foods we eat. The foods we eat can affect the health of our gums, just like teeth. Too many sweets are bad, too many fatty foods are bad, too many salty foods are bad, and basically, too much of anything is bad. 

You should seek treatment immediately if you suspect you have gum disease. Although the negative effects of gum disease might not be obvious right away, it can lead to tooth loss.
